Concert
Explosions in the Sky and Mr. Twin Sister
Ballroom Marfa was honored to host the ambient and powerful post-rock group Explosions in the Sky with a twilight concert at Vizcaino Park on the edge of Marfa.
The quartet originally hails from West Texas (three of the members are from Midland), and the influence of the desert on their music is palpable. Equal parts romance and tragedy, their beautiful melodies have the tendency to ignite into head-spinning walls of noise — with rises and swells that somehow capture the feeling of being alive right now
Opening the show was New York band Twin Sister, who plays hypnotic pop à la Galaxie 500, with some Fleetwood Mac and a shot of synthy weirdness thrown in for good measure. Slack yet focused, their sound pulses like a spark in the dark distance on a desert highway where speed is relative. Think The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, with nods to the Cocteau Twins, Luscious Jackson, and Björk.
