Concert
Ballroom Marfa presented cellist Matt Haimovitz on March 26, 2005.
From the folk-influenced compositions of Bela Bartok and Gyorgy Ligeti, Matt Haimovitz and DJ Olive embarked on a journey from Hungarian/Romanian folk roots to American pop culture, blurring the boundaries between concert music and dance party.
Mr. Haimovitz tours extensively around the world, appearing with today’s greatest orchestras, conductors and chamber musicians. He has performed with such distinguished artists as Zubin Mehta, Daniel Barenboim, Isaac Stern, Pinchas Zukerman, and Yo-Yo Ma.
In the early 2000s, Mr. Haimovitz went on an unusual tour, bringing solo cello to non-classical venues around the country.
The tour brought Mr. Haimovitz to more than 50 cities across the US, Canada, and the UK, garnering an extraordinary audience response and critical acclaim. In October of 2002 he sold out New York City’s infamous punk Club, CBGB, playing Bach. In November 03, Mr. Haimovitz performed Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the Israel Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta conducting. By bridging these stages and through his “Listening-Room” Tour, Matt Haimovitz opened the world of classical music to new audiences of music lovers.
