“There are a lot of photos in this post that can describe my visit to Marfa, but this is one of my favorite moments. Ballroom Marfa flew Mick out to play the opening of ‘Autobody’. There were a lot of back and forth emails. There was planning of flights and hotel rooms. There were press releases and posters. But on Friday 9/30/11, all the things that go into preparing an art opening and music performance were outshined by the most strategic and intense game of tag played by the youth of Marfa. Man, that game was intense. So intense that the kids had no idea there was a dude incessantly playing metallic solos for 30 minutes. Towards the end of Mick’s set, one of the girls found a spider. So there was a lot of running back and forth while holding a spider in two cups. I had a lot of big chuckles throughout the weekend. This picture really does just sum it up.”

— Justina Villaneuva, from her blog, describing her and performer Mick Barr‘s weekend in Marfa as part of the AutoBody opening, 30 September 2011

More amazing photos here. Thanks to Justina and Mick and all the artists — Liz Cohen, Jonathan Schipper, Meredith Danluck, and Neville Wakefield — for being such awesome guests. It was an honor to have them.

Sarah Cain at the Masonic Lodge (plus our first public performance in New York! This Monday and Tuesday!)

So much going on here in Marfa with Chinati Open House weekend! But just wanted to give a shout out to Sarah Cain’s exhibition, Forget me not, which opens officially today, and runs through 4 December 2011. Part of LAND‘s multi-site, multi-artist exhibition Nothing Beside Remains, happening throughout 2011 and 2012 throughout Marfa, Cain has created a site-specific installation for the first floor of the former Masonic Lodge (generously provided by Jeff Fort). In a series of new paintings, this installation explores, in both concept and imagery, the forget-me-not flower — a Masonic symbol later co-opted unknowingly by the Nazis. Conceptually, Forget me not deals with themes such as belief systems and doubt, double meanings and faith, and investigates physical, emotional, and psychic space. For viewings, please contact LAND to make an appointment.

And people of New York: Come to our first public performance in New York: Atom Fables, a performative work of experimental filmic sequences by artist Laleh Khorramian set to live soundtracks by Shahzad Ismaily. It’s all happening Monday and Tuesday, 10 and 11 October, at 8 pm at the 14th Street passage of the High Line. It’s free, so there’s really no excuse. The program is presented in collaboration with Friends of the High Line, and it’s going to be amazing! More details here and here.

AutoBody opening wrap-up, plus the amazing Mick Barr and Mariachi Las Alteñas

4 Oct 2011

Just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out to the opening of AutoBody on Friday, 30 September 2011: the artists, performers, community members, and everyone who helped make it happen (you can see the list of everyone who contributed here…it takes a village, often at the last minute).

As part of the opening celebration, we had Mick Barr perform in the courtyard during the reception, followed by the incredible Mariachi Las Alteñas at the community dinner. Here are clips from each performance: both will give you shivers. So good. A big thank you to both Mick and the Mariachis. Videos courtesy of Alberto Tomas Halpern (who also took all the great photos at the opening).

AutoBody runs through 29 January 2012. See more photos from the opening. And check out the latest in our we-can’t-believe-how-great-they-are musician portrait series, courtesy of Alex Marks: Mick Barr and Mariachi Las Alteñas.

Here are photos from our intern Elizabeth Fisher‘s show, Wind Vane, shown in the basement of the Masonic Lodge, March 25, 2011. Foundation for Contemporary Arts award

29 Jul 2011

We’re honored to announce that The Foundation for Contemporary Arts (FCA), a non-profit arts organization that supports contemporary visual and performing arts, has granted Ballroom Marfa one of its 62 grants this year. Through grants, FCA supports contemporary arts organizations that provide visual and performing artists with opportunities to present imaginative work to the public or offer artists crucial professional services. FCA was established in 1963 through the efforts of artists Jasper Johns and John Cage in the belief that painters and sculptors were sufficiently concerned about the state of performance arts—dance, theater and music—to donate their work in support of performing artists. For more information about the grants and recipients, please visit FCA.

Stylistically, the work is rather difficult to place.
In 1991 the conductors of the 14 major symphony orchestras in Canada (ie, those with budgets over $1 million) still were predominantly foreign, the exceptions being Mario Bernardi of the Calgary Philharmonic, Victor Feldbrill of the Hamilton Philharmonic, and Peter McCoppin of the Victoria Symphony Orchestra (Uri Mayer of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, was a naturalized Canadian).
However, in recent interviews, Jordan expressed no interest in resigning and seemed to be planning to continue.

What a nice surprise: Vogue and writer Dodie Kazanjian chose our current show, The World According to New Orleans, as one of their ten essential art shows to see this summer (highlighting Dawn Dedeaux’s installation, Steps Home, above). Other featured exhibitions include Frances Stark’s animated My Best Thing at Marc Foxx and Shannon Ebner’s The Electric Comma at Hammer Projects (see all the selections here). The World According to New Orleans closes August 14.

The UA will also get creative with incoming wide receiver Cameron Denson, who will see some time at corner on third downsin Climate Change: Impacts and Mitigation, Heriot Watt University.

Housed in the former Stars restaurant space (it was also home to Trader Vic’s and the short lived Maestro), the expansive space (8,000 square feet) will offer something for everyone it seems, including a large bar and DJ lounge in the main area that will serve cocktails and offer bottle service.

Our newest board member, Matthew Day Jackson

We are beyond excited to announce our newest board member, Matthew Day Jackson. We exhibited Matt’s work in our 2005 exhibition, You Are Here, and again in 2007 for Nada Art Fair at Miami Basel. He also created silver knuckles, Sculpture for My Right Hand, as a special artist edition for Ballroom in 2008, as well as participated in our 2011 Benefit. He’s been a great supporter of Ballroom Marfa since the beginning, and it’s a total honor to have him on board.

And note: Matt has a new project, Super Comp Dragster Racing Team, which explores the high speed, ethanol ambitions of drag racing (and how intellectual and physical ventures of this sort can push us into new territories of good and evil). Read all about it here. And as always: LIVE FAST, DIE LAST.

The Basement Series

9 Apr 2011

We’ve started a new and exciting initiative with our interns, The Basement Series, where they can have a show in the basement of the Masonic Lodge, a beautiful building owned by Jeff Fort here in Marfa. We’ve now had two interns take advantage of the space, Luis Nieto Dickens and our current intern, Elizabeth Fisher. Here are a few photos from Luis’s show, Au, with his artist statement:

The ratio of dirt that has to be dug to obtain gold: 1 gram for each 1.0581 tons.
The space is filled with 5.2905 tons of dirt for the 5 gram gold nugget.
Dirt is brought in by using two small buckets, making the piece labor intensive.
Dirt will be removed using the same process.
The gold nugget is a loan from jeweler Daniel Szwaczkowski.
