The Chronicles of Marnia

4 Feb 2013

“There’s this feeling I’ve had where I’m trying to pull creativity out of myself, where I love to do music so much, but the connections I make with it are not as strong as the ones I made when I was young. So trying to find those connections again becomes more and more difficult, more diluted. And I’ve been longing to have that feeling of listening to something and being in love with it so much.”

Beach House Live in Tornillo, TX

30 Jan 2013

As most readers of the Ballroom blog already know, Beach House is going to be playing here in Marfa on April 21, 2013 — pre-sale tickets are long gone, but we’ll be releasing a few standing-room only tickets at 7:30p the night of the show.

The Baltimore band is no stranger to West Texas, either, as they recorded Bloom, their lush 2012 album, at Sonic Ranch in Tornillo, one of the small border towns between Marfa and El Paso. The above clip is a teaser from “Forever Still”, a short film the band made during the recording process. It’s set to debut on Pitchfork.tv on February 4.

“Climax”

Kind of really into this cover of Usher’s “Climax” by Dirty Projectors, but I’m a Dirty Projectors sucker, also an Usher sucker. Via Pitchfork.

Also last night Ty Segall was amazing (with Mikal Cronin on bass, YES), special thanks to Padre’s for the wild night. I’ve seen Ty five times (!) and he’s just a total champ — this time he let a long-haired dude in the audience shred on his guitar while he thrashed around in the audience. WORD.

Have we shown this off yet?

Kahil El’Zabar and Hamiet Bluiett

Love this picture of Kahil El’Zabar and Hamiet Bluiett, who we are completely honored to have perform at the opening reception of Rashid Johnson’s new visual arts exhibition, New Growth. If you’re not familiar, Bluiett is one of the most prominent baritone saxophonists of his generation, while El’Zabar is a percussionist who formed the acclaimed ensembles Ritual Trio and the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Legit legends. Playing at Ballroom Marfa. March 8. Videos to come.
