New Yacht album! New Yacht video!

23 Jun 2011

Video courtesy of YACHT and DFA Records.

Ballroom alums and Marfa faves YACHT have a new record out, Shangri-LA, recorded at Marfa Recording Company. Here’s the new double-feature film for two songs from the album, “Utopia & Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire).” Claire explains about the video, directed by Rene Daalder:

“I don’t even really know how to preface this. A huge moment for me, as a maker, to make something with a longtime hero: an eight-minute science fiction architectural epic music video film for YACHT’s “Utopia” and “Dystopia (The Earth is on Fire)” directed by Rene Daalder. Rene is a punk rock auteur, a science fiction B-movie creator, a futurist, a radical thinker, and now a mentor.”

Check out behind-the-scenes photos and more about the video at YACHT’s site.

Cass McCombs poster, designed by Jillian Tamaki and Jon Han.

I’ve been dying to work with Jillian Tamaki forever, after falling in love with her contribution to the Pencil Factory Newsprint, which won the Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators in 2010. She’s an amazing illustrator and artist (her short comic “Domestic Men of Mystery” will be included in this year’s Best American Comics), and also recently did these insane needlepoint book covers for Penguin Classics. ANYWAY. She’s great. And I’m so happy to announce that she and her friend Jon Han designed the poster for the upcoming Cass McCombs show (tickets on sale here). The posters are being printed now, and will be in our store soon. (We’ll also be selling them at the show. Very limited-edition.) –NICKI

Update: The posters arrived, and they look amazing. Special thanks to Industry Screenprint in Austin for doing such a killer job. Onsale now!

Adam Forkner’s new project: Purple & Green

5 Jun 2011

PURPLE & GREEN – “HUMAN NATURE” from judesays on Vimeo.

Adam Forkner (of White Rainbow and Rob Walmart) played at Ballroom in 2009 with YACHT, and has a new project with Justin “J. Green” Johnson, Purple & Green, which is kind of sick awesome. Watch this video and dare you not to get jazzed. And want to buy a Honda. Maybe they will swing by Marfa and play for us: TOTAL DANCE PARTY.

Cass McCombs Band playing July 8 in Marfa

13 May 2011

We’re completely amazed and excited to announce that, with Marfa Book Company, we’ll be presenting the Cass McCombs Band here in Marfa on 8 July 2011. We’re still working out all the details, but please pen it into your calendars. JULY 8. MARFA. Cass has a new record out, Wit’s End, from which you can stream the single “County Line,” and here’s one of my favorite songs from his 2003 album, A.

Special note: If you’re in Marfa on June 2, don’t miss Lower Dens, which features Jana Hunter, who’s supporting Cass McCombs on parts of his tour. Show at 9 pm at the ping-pong parlor here in Marfa.

The Royal Butchers

The Royal Butchers setlist

Here’s a copy of the Royal Butchers set list from Saturday night. The band played a totally scorching set — lead singer Aaron Blount is an amazing talent (he headed the now-defunct band Knife in the Water). If you’re ever able to see him or the Royal Butchers, please do. Special thanks to Gory Smelley, Rob Crowley, and Ty Mitchell for making the space so amazing. Photos coming soon.

La Santa Cecilia

14 Sep 2010

This weekend we’re hosting our first conference, Marfa Dialogues: Politics and Culture of the Border, which brings together an array of speakers for three days of art, film, music, and literature. On Saturday night, the Los Angeles-based band La Santa Cecilia — who mix cumbia, bossa nova, rumba, boleros, tango, rock, and klezmer music — will play as part of the festivities.

The poster for the show was designed by Luis Nieto Dickens, who also designed the Marfa Dialogues brochure. The poster is a limited-edition silkscreen, available for purchase in our store. Get them now before they’re sold out (when laid together, they form a type of wallpaper).

Frank and Ray are always there to help with whatever we need

Prosecutors told a press conference after the verdicts were read that they plan to retry Dunn, who has been in jail since his arrest in 2012, on the first degree murder charge.
I thought that was a really good sign.

The three run inning broke it open and gave Volquez plenty of cushion.
“You learn how to bear down and get stuff done away from the rink, which was always easier growing up with your parents around.

Ty Segall!

13 Sep 2010

Amazing news: Ty Segall is performing our Immaterial opening party on October 2, 2010. I saw him play in Portland with The Oh Sees a couple years ago, when he was just a one-man band, and it was terrific. Should be an amazing show.
