Ballroom is pleased to be participating in this year’s Future Generation Art Prize, a worldwide contemporary art prize to discover, recognize and give long-term support to a future generation of artists

The prize is an innovative new international award for artists up to 35 years of age, investing in the artistic development and new production of works

Awarded through a competition, judged by a distinguished jury, the Prize is founded on the idea of generosity, a network of outstanding patron artists and institutional partners, and a highly democratic application procedure

Last year’s winner was Cinthia Marcelle, a Brazilian film, photograph, performance and installation artist

For more information on her practice, check out the Pinchuk Art Center website, here

Ballroom will nominate seven artists for the award, but individual artists can apply online here

James Dean and Sustainable Wind Energy in Texas, oh my!

March 26, 2012

“Everybody thought I had a duster. Y’all thought ol’ Spindletop Burke and Burnett was all the oil there was, didn’t ya? Well, I’m here to tell you that it ain’t, boy! It’s here, and there ain’t a dang thing you gonna do about it! My well came in big, so big, Bick and there’s more down there and there’s bigger wells. I’m rich, Bick. I’m a rich ‘un. I’m a rich boy. Me, I’m gonna have more money than you ever thought you could have–you and all the rest of you stinkin’ sons of…Benedicts!” — James Dean as Jett Rink in the film Giant (1956)

Reynard Loki, co-curator of our current exhibition Data Deluge, has written an article about wind energy and Ballroom’s commissioned work A Voice in the Desert by Roberto Pugliese for Just Means, a website filled with information and connections for the sustainable business industry. In it, Loki highlights the siren’s call of the nation’s second windiest state to both artists and energy companies. He says, “today, thanks to renewable energy production incentives, a favorable regulatory environment and large expanses of windswept landscapes, Texas has become America’s wind power leader. With over 10GW of installed wind power capacity, it boasts nearly a fourth of the nation’s total.” Exciting and important news for not just us locals but the whole country! But he warns, “if Congress fails to renew the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC), which expires in December, wind energy experts believe that the gale force Texas wind industry will be reduced to a breeze.” To read the complete article, click here.

Dan is working on a new video and installation for the project entitled The Space Between You and Me. More more information, click here.

Bob Nickas picks the best of 2011

January 5, 2012

The Dirtbombs’ cover of “Shari Vari,” one of Bob Nickas’ best of 2011

asked a number of artists, curators, and critics for their picks of 2011, including curator and editor Bob Nickas, who curated Every Revolution Is a Roll of the Dice for us back in 2007. I love “best of” lists, and Nickas’ is pretty interesting, especially his music choices, which include The Dirtbombs, Ty Segall (who played the opening of Immaterial in 2010, which was incredible), the Melvins, the Caretaker, and Tim Hecker. (and note that Ballroom alum Charline Von Heyl’s current show at ICA Philadelphia got a shout-out, as did Flint Jamison’s solo show in Paris and the excellent triplecanopy). –NICKI

Rob Fisher’s work at the former D.A. Russell Hospital for the upcoming LAND exhibition

Mark the date for Los Angeles Nomadic Division’s exhibition NOTHING BESIDE REMAINS WEEKEND in Marfa. From Dec. 9th to 11th, LAND will host performances and programming by exhibiting artists, selected screenings, and guided tours of the exhibition.

Nothing Beside Remains is a suite of commissioned public projects sited in Marfa, presented by LAND, opening in September 2011 and continuing into 2012.

Integrated into the boundless West Texas landscape, and connected by the thematic evoked in the exhibition’s titular reference, P.B. Shelley’s “Ozymandias,” these projects address the beauty and poetry in decay, the inevitable decline of the monumental, and the fleeting presence of legacy in the face of the erosion of time.

Exhibiting artists include Andrea Bowers, Sarah Cain, Sue de Beer, Rob Fischer, Karl Haendel, Ry Rocklen, Mungo Thomson, and Garth Weiser.

For more information and the schedule of events, visit LAND’s website.

If you’re in New York this Thursday, stop by the Sheila C. Johnson Design Center (SJDC) at Parsons The New School for Design for the opening reception for U-n-f-o-l-d: A Cultural Response to Climate Change, curated by David Buckland and Chris Wainwright for Cape Farewell in collaboration with the University of the Arts London.

David is curating our fall 2012 show, Carbon, which focuses on environmental artists and issues. He is the founder of an incredible London-based organization Cape Farewell, an artistic project that he started in 2001, which embeds artists in a series of scientific expeditions to the world’s tipping points.

U-n-f-o-l-d, which runs from September 30 to December 15, presents work by 25 artists, musicians, writers and other creative practitioners who participated in two Cape Farewell expeditions to the High Arctic region in 2007 and 2008, and to the Andes in 2009, where they witnessed firsthand the effects of climate change. Working across multiple media, the artists explore the physical, emotional, and political dimensions of a complex and changing world stressed by human activity. Featured in the exhibition are artists Ackroyd & Harvey, Amy Balkin, David Buckland, Adriane Colburn, Sam Collins, Nick Edwards, Francesca Galeazzi, Nathan Gallagher, Marjie de Haas, Brenndan McGuire, Daro Montag, Michèle Noach, Lucy + Jorge Orta, Sunand Prasad, Tracey Rowledge, Shiro Takatani, Clare Twomey and Chris Wainwright; musicians Leslie Feist, Robyn Hitchcock + KT Tunstall; novelist Ian McEwan; and poet Lemn Sissay.

And if you’re in Marfa this Thursday, CineMarfa presents An Evening With Richard Hell (he of punk rock bands Television and Richard Hell and the Voidoids). He’ll be screening a 20-minute film he wrote, directed, and acted in, called MEET THERESA STERN, as well as reading a few pages from across his career. Afterwards there will be a short Q & A. The event starts at 7pm at the Crowley Theater in Marfa.

Charles Mary Kubricht’s Dazzle on the High Line

August 31, 2011

WWI dazzle on ship

Marfa is taking over the High Line! In addition to Ballroom’s upcoming program with Laleh Khorramian and Shahzad Ismaily, Marfa artist Charles Mary Kubricht will transform park storage containers located on the High Line at the Rail Yards. The High Line at the Rail Yards is located between West 30th and West 34th Streets, and the installation will be on view from the northern end of the park, near West 30th Street, beginning Saturday, September 24.

Kubricht’s installation is inspired by dazzle, a type of protective design and coloration on animals described by Abbott Thayer in America and developed into military camouflage by Norman Wilkinson in Great Britain during World War I. Dazzle camouflage was used to confuse the enemy by disguising the ships and complicating the tracking of the ship’s movement. For the High Line, the artist will paint black and white disruptive patterns on park storage containers, altering the view of these large structures from the northern end of the High Line. For more information, please visit the High Line.

Check out samples of Kubricht’s dazzle installations in other venues. Kubricht also has an upcoming solo exhibition at the Marfa Book Company.
